internet marketing

Blogger Andrew Trench recently presented a theory on the threshold of when Internet penetration starts to matter, writing:

Social networks have also been given plenty of credit for the revolution unfolding in Egypt.

So I went and had a look at the numbers over on www.internetworldstats.com to see what they could tell us about these two scenarios. Well, fascinatingly, both Egypt and Tunisia have seen a massive growth in internet users and internet penetration over the last 10 years.

Both have now got internet penetration of over 20% and in Tunisia's case it was as high as 34%.

While it is clearly simplistic to over-state this factor and there must be many more drivers contributing to such a rapid political uprising, it is obviously a factor as evidenced by the Egyptian regime pulling the plug on the country's internet access to try and block the rising tide of revolt.

My back-of-napkin theory is this: that a rapid increase in internet penetration in a repressive regime does play an important role as it provides an unfettered channel of communication allowing disaffected citizens to share views - and more importantly - to rapidly organise and mobilise.

If Egypt and Tunisia are valid case studies, it looks like internet penetration of around 20% is the mark.

Geopolitics & Macroeconomics adds:

Internet penetration: Social networking sites were critical to sustaining the momentum in the recent protests. The internet penetration in Egypt is 16%. In Libya, it is a meagre 5% [1]. The unrest in Libya has thus far remained concentrated in regions that are geographically distant from the seat of ‘real' power (see more on this below). The dependence of momentum on internet communication is far greater in Libya than in Egypt where protests began in Cairo itself.

Taking the conversation to Pakistan, Sabene Saigol writes, on BrandRepublic:

Perhaps one reason for this is that we're still not that used to communicating via the ‘net - maybe we need greater broadband and internet penetration. Personally I think it is more to do with culture - while Pakistani internet users are savvy to using social media to connect with friends, I feel they have not yet ‘crossed over' to seeing SM as a means for professional communications - or even wider social communications that go beyond their immediate circle. Yes, there are no doubt savvy people - both within marketing and tech circles, and outside - however, these people are likely a tiny proportion of the total number of ‘net and social media users.

I read an interesting article this morning that suggested Apple would change its mind and put Adobe’s Flash technology on its iOS devices within a year. I don’t think that’s going to happen.

In an open letter to users, Apple CEO Steve Jobs gave several reasons why he didn’t want Flash on the iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. They are: Flash isn’t open; the full web; reliability, security and performance; battery life; and touch.

Adobe began shipping Flash Player 10.1 for Mobile last June, but even Laptop magazine admitted that “Steve Jobs was right,” and that “Adobe’s offering seems like it’s too little, too late.” Granted, that report was from six months ago, but it still doesn’t bode well for the technology.

There is no doubt that Adobe is making advances with Flash on mobile devices, but I don’t believe future changes will be enough to get Apple to adopt the technology.

Jobs has been very clear that Apple supports HTML5, an open technology that is controlled by a standards committee, not one company. By building support for that technology into Webkit, Apple is ensuring that mobile Web browsers will be able to access what we’ve come to know as the “full web.”

Webkit is used by Google, Palm, Nokia and RIM, so it has a pretty solid base.

One of the arguments often bantered about when the discussion of the “full Web” comes up is video. There is no doubt that Flash made huge strides over the years in having sites like YouTube encode their videos in Flash. But that’s for the desktop.

As Jobs points out, almost all of this video is also available in H.264 format (a format Flash also supports), so it’s viewable on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

“Add to this video from Vimeo, Netflix, Facebook, ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, ESPN, NPR, Time, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated, People, National Geographic, and many, many others. iPhone, iPod and iPad users aren’t missing much video,” wrote Jobs.

You may ask why other companies adopted Flash for their mobile devices when Apple won’t. That’s easy, they are looking for something they have that Apple doesn’t. Considering how hard it is for tablet makers to compete with Apple, any perceived advantage will work.

I’m not an Adobe hater—I know quite a few people that work at Adobe and I think they’ve done some amazing things over the years. Flash for mobile devices isn’t one of them.

Chris Dawson said he gives “Apple a year until they cave [and adopt Flash]. Android tablets will just be too cool and too useful for both entertainment and enterprise applications if they don’t.”

I have been using my iPhone for years and my iPad for one year. I honestly can’t remember the last time I went to a Web site that wouldn’t load because I didn’t have Flash installed. I can load videos from YouTube and a host of other sites too, no problem.

Apple has sold more than 160 million iOS devices and there are no screaming, angry hordes of users breaking down the doors at 1 Infinite Loop demanding Flash on their devices.

In order for Apple to change its mind and adopt Flash, the technology has to be proven to be indispensable and that it will benefit its users. Apple has proven just the opposite is true.

With the company’s future already clouded by Steve Jobs’ latest medical leave, the possibility of the iPad’s chief designer, Jonathan Ive, cashing out ups the uncertainty, Dan Lyons writes.

Is Apple losing its design guru?

When Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced in January that he would take a third medical leave, the biggest concern was the cloud of uncertainty that hovered over the company. Now that uncertainty has become an issue again, as rumors have started swirling that Apple might lose its chief designer, Jonathan Ive.

Apple's head designer Jonathan Ive poses for a portrait on January 27, 2010 in Cupertino, California. (Photo by Paul Harris / Newscom)

Reports in Ive’s native England suggest that the man who oversaw the design of the iPhone and iPad wants to spend more time in the U.K., putting him at odds with Apple’s board enough that he would consider leaving the company. Although Ive and Apple won’t comment, the scenario is plausible for two reasons: First, Ive is about to cash in options valued at $30 million that he was granted in 2008; and second, Ive has an especially close relationship with Jobs.

Whether Ive stays or goes, the brouhaha shows the challenges that Apple is increasingly likely to face given the questions about Jobs’ role in the coming months. One scenario being bandied about by Apple-watchers suggests Ive is making a power play to succeed Jobs; it seems just as likely, however, that he simply may not want to work at Apple if Jobs isn’t there.

Still others think the entire notion that Ive might leave is completely unfounded. But either way, the whole incident shows how the Jobs health situation is bringing more drama to a company that, until now, has been a model of tight-lipped discipline.

Apple’s products are famous for their sleek designs, and conventional wisdom holds that losing Ive would be a terrible blow to Apple—“Apple’s worst nightmare,” Britain’s Guardian called it. But the truth is, losing Ive may not be as big a deal as some Apple watchers think.

For one thing, Apple has loads of bench strength in every department, and because of its success it can attract just about anyone it wants.

“How much of this is Steve, how much is Jon, how much someone else? Steve always had an eye for design. The designer is only as good as the client,” says Jean-Louis Gassée.

For another, the real genius behind Apple’s designs might not be Ive—but rather Jobs.

That’s the educated guess of Jean-Louis Gassée, a former top executive at Apple and a longtime close watcher of the company who still has many connections there.

Gassée points out that Ive was already working at Apple when Jobs returned to the company in 1996. Ive joined the company in 1992, when Jobs was gone from the company, having been ousted by the board in 1985.

And before Jobs returned to Apple, Ive wasn’t exactly setting the world on fire. The first products that Ive designed under Jobs were the “Bondi Blue” iMac and the somewhat ugly iBook. Ive’s next products, the "desk lamp" Mac and the early metal laptops, were better looking, Gassée says.

Making Money Opportunities

Hello, I’m Diane Black. In addition to being a nurse, I'm also a small business owner and I taught at a local community college. I’m also a proud mother of three and grandmother of six – all of them wonderful. Just two months ago today, I had the honor of being sworn-in to serve the people of Tennessee’s Sixth Congressional District, as part of the new Republican freshman class in the House of Representatives.

My colleagues and I in the freshman class know that we weren’t sent to Washington to sit on our hands, or to find new ways to avoid old problems. We were sent here by our constituents to help put an end to Washington's policies that are making it harder to create jobs and threatening our nation’s future.

Job creation has to be the number-one priority for both parties. The policies of the past haven’t worked, and despite some signs of life in our economy, the unemployment rate is still far above the levels that the president’s advisors promised when the ‘stimulus’ spending bill was signed into law.

What we need is a new approach – a path to prosperity that gets government out of the way by cutting unnecessary spending and removing barriers to job growth. We need to unleash our nation’s economy instead of burying it under a mountain of regulation, taxation and debt.

Since the moment we were sworn into office, this has been the focus of our new majority in the House.

Whenever I tour my district and I ask small businesspeople ‘what can I do to help?,’ they tell me to just get government out of the way and they’ll create the jobs and grow on their own.

That’s exactly why our new majority is taking a complete inventory of Washington's rules and regulations, looking to root out the ones that make it harder to create jobs.

We’re hoping to find things that could have been discovered if Washington had been doing its work in an open and transparent way. There’s no better example of this than the 1099 paperwork mandate in ObamaCare. The House passed a bill this week to repeal it.

And soon, we’re going to vote to cut wasteful mandatory spending programs – not just in ObamaCare, but also in the Dodd-Frank financial regulation bill that’s drying up credit for our small businesses.  We’ve also got our eye on EPA rules that are hurting job creation and creating higher gas prices.

It’s not just the overreaching that has to stop – it’s the overspending, which many economists agree is a barrier to job creation.

It’s now been just two weeks since the House passed H.R. 1, a bill that makes much-needed spending cuts and keeps the government running through the end of the fiscal year. Unfortunately, the Democrats who run the Senate haven’t allowed the vote on this bill or any other bill that would cut spending and keep the government running long-term.

You may have heard President Obama say that we need to make sure ‘we're living within our means.’ He’s right about that. Unfortunately, his budget doesn’t match his words. It continues out-of-control spending, it adds to our $14 trillion debt, and it adds to the uncertainty that makes it harder to create jobs. Maintaining the status quo – and refusing to offer a credible plan to cut spending – is just unacceptable and inexcusable.

Again, we weren’t sent here to sit on our hands. The American people want us to keep the government running while cutting its cost. So with your support, Republicans spearheaded the passage of a short-term measure that cuts spending by $4 billion.

That’s $4 billion of YOUR money that would otherwise have gone to earmarks and other wasteful programs. It’s a start, but it’s not nearly enough. By enacting this bill, we’ve provided another two weeks for our Democrat colleagues in the Senate to either pass H.R. 1, or to pass a credible alternative that meets the people’s priorities. Doing nothing is not an option.

After two years, we know that government doesn’t create private-sector jobs. It’s small businesses and the people behind them who do. That’s why our majority is focused on getting government out of the way and charting a new path to prosperity. It’s what our constituents sent us here to do, and it’s what we need to do for the future of our children and our country. Thank you for listening.    ####

Like some of you, I have an uncle who likes forwarding emails that feature quotations, random slide shows and holiday alerts. Mind you, since we have a lot of holidays and festivals in India, these emails are frequent. Still, it is fun to hear from him (mostly because I love him). Recently, he emailed me an old folk tale.

According to the story, a farmer has a donkey, which falls into a well. The donkey starts braying, forcing the farmer to look for ways to figure out what to do. His conclusion? Since the donkey is old, it’s not worth the effort to retrieve the donkey.

He starts shoveling dirt into the well. The donkey has an “oh-crikey” moment and it starts crying and creating a fuss. But then, it quiets down. With every few shovels of dirt, the donkey re-adjusts, shakes dirt off his back, and stands up. Before the farmer knew it, the donkey was out of the wall.

This old folklore has a simple lesson: When life pours dirt on you, shake it off and move forward. This lesson is particularly true for start-ups that have to face their moment of truth.

Game On

I was reminded of this story when I was transcribing my interview with Neil Young, CEO and co-founder of mobile video games start-up, ngmoco (acquired by Japan’s DeNA for $403 million.) Young and I have talked off and on, and before he sold his company, he and I discussed the change of direction he made for the company.

Neil shared with me the story of how, when facing a near impossible business environment, he had to find a new business model for his company, which started life building premium mobile games.  It sold a lot of games!

To the outside world, ngmoco was a massive success, but Young knew the harsh facts:  the games had a very short half-life and they lost money-making potential once they fell out of the top ten or after the initial couple of weeks.

Young argues that for a company making premium mobile games, the company would have to have two games in the top five paid games on the iPhone store for 365 days for the company to build a $10 million a year business.

Even if you added Android platform opportunities, ngmoco was still in a hit-driven business. With new free (and paid) apps launching every day, Young & Co. knew that it would be difficult to keep on the hit trail. Moreover, the average price of the games was decaying fast and settling at around 99 cents. The ad-based revenue stream wasn’t going to be enough, as the eCPMs were pretty low. Like the donkey, ngmoco was in a well, with no likelihood of coming out.

However, upon closer scrutiny, Young’s team realized they had a lot of games, which had very high engagement and user loyalty. “Games are not built for a fleeting moment in the charts, but are built for an (ongoing) relationship with the customer, “ he says. “The longer you can maintain that relationship, the longer the opportunity.”

Armed with this knowledge, ngmoco started the Plus+ network (its social gaming network), and embraced the Freemium model that eventually led to the company increasing its revenues and later selling out to DeNA.

All Chips In

Young isn’t the first corporate honcho who made tough decisions. Intel Corp., the company we chip-heads affectionately refer to as Chipzilla, was the proverbial donkey in the well in 1983, when it was getting killed in the market by Japanese memory chip makers.

The company had been dabbling in the microprocessor business, supplying chips to the likes of IBM, but the majority of its revenues came from the sales of memory chips, primarily dynamic random access memory (DRAM).

Andy Grove, then-president of Intel (and later its CEO and chairman) made a crucial decision: Forget the memory chips and gamble it all on becoming the single source of microprocessors for the PC industry. His decision came at a time when it wasn’t clear what PC standards were going to prevail, or if the 8086 processor was going to catch on. The rest is history.

And the Story Goes…

Richard Tedlow, a professor at Harvard, in his book, Denial: Why Business Leaders Fail to Look Facts in the Face and What To Do About It once wrote: “Denial is the unconscious calculus that if an unpleasant reality were true, it would be too terrible, so therefore cannot be true… In fact, denial might be the biggest and potentially most ruinous problem that businesses face, from start-ups to mature, powerful corporations.”

Nokia’s denial of the existence of the iPhone and the disruptive impact on its business is a good example. Young of ngmoco could have accepted the short-term success of his company, but instead he decided not to.

I have seen many a startups (and many a founder) spend most of its energies bemoaning its miseries, instead of trying to do something about it. But like the proverbial donkey, the decision is yours to make.

Interview! by adelaide rose

Most roofing companies provide totally free consultations. This is especially important, since it provides them a chance to assess exactly what your roof needs, and it provides you with a chance to evaluate them. As with all of businesses, believe in intuition concerning the individuals you let upward on your roof. No matter exactly how great a contractor's reputation or suggestion, he should start by presenting a person having a business greeting card. If a contractor arrives looking and talking within an less than professional manner, most likely the job he's going to do will also be unprofessional. This is not to express that you ought to expect companies to reach within suits. They is going to be climbing on your roofing, so the majority of will be dressed in jeans and work footwear or even sneakers. If the service provider seems to be interested in talking upon his mobile phone while on your roof than he is in evaluating your roof's needs, which may be another indication that he's not really the main one to do the job. For the lawful protection, be certain that the contractor has sufficient legal responsibility insurance.

Roof Evaluation

Expect that the service provider is going to be rising in your roof. In fact, any contractor who not want to go up in your roofing to evaluate the issue ought to be immediately discounted. Those who are serious about their function will either make a sketching of the roof's surface area and mark trouble spots on it as they undergo their own assessment, or even they will consider pictures or video clip from the surface area while they're up there. This is a very important action, since it allows you to see exactly what the troubles are as well as know how they'll be set.

Estimate

The next phase will be the created estimation. The service provider will require away their loan calculator and come track of a written estimate. Some contractors will go to their own truck or truck and write down the suggestion, while some may crisis the actual numbers to do the job in front of you. Once you are given the proposal, make sure that you comprehend which products is going to be used, just how long the job will require and when you will find any extra or even concealed expenses that could occur during the repair from the roof. The service provider should be able to solution many of these concerns with ease as well as forewarn a person of any extra costs that might be sustained should the roof's ethics end up being damaged within.

After you have received several written estimations from roofing contractors, assess exactly what every organization or contractor is willing to offer you for the price. Do not always discount the highest bid, simply because occasionally the highest bid will actually be the contractor who the job properly. Also, be skeptical of prices for bids which are significantly less than other people. They may be using substandard items or perhaps be untruthful concerning the possibility of concealed expenses. Above all, trust your intuition as well as go with the contractor who enables you to feel quite comfortable about handing over your hard earned money.

Seven Uyghurs Sentenced to Death

2011-03-23

Critics of the sentences say China has politicized the robberies as acts of terrorism.

A Uyghur man walks past armed Chinese security forces in Urumqi, July 17, 2009.

Chinese authorities in the northwestern region of Xinjiang have ordered the executions of seven ethnic minority Uyghur men convicted of "violent" crimes, official media said on Wednesday.

The death sentences were handed down by the Supreme People's Court in recent days, according to state media in the regional capital, Urumqi.

The men were accused in connection with three separate attacks late last year in the Silk Road city of Kashgar, according to the news website Urumqi Online.

According to another website, the Xinjiang-based Tianshan news site, Aimaiti Tuheti, Yiming Dawuti, and unnamed "others" killed a security guard at a pedestrian mall as part of a failed Aug. 7 robbery attempt.

In a separate incident on Oct. 12, it said, Nuermaimaiti Aobulikasimu and 11 others broke into a house, bound and killed the couple living in it, and took their possessions.

It said the group also broke into the homes of two brothers, robbed them, and killed six people in a Nov. 11 attack in Kashgar.

The report gave no information about the victims or the schedule for the executions.

Three of the men were sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, a sentence that is normally commuted to life imprisonment in China's judicial system.

They were convicted of deliberate homicide and armed robbery by the Kashgar Intermediate People's Court in the first instance.

'Strike hard' campaign

A Han Chinese resident of Urumqi surnamed Yang said a reference to "terrorism" in official news reports on the case showed that it was being politicized by the authorities, who have launched a series of "strike hard" campaigns in Xinjiang following deadly ethnic violence in July 2009.

"There is an implied political meaning; that they were somehow engaged in separatist activities or ethnic divisions," said Yang.

Exile Uyghur groups said the trials had been conducted behind closed doors, with scant opportunity for public scrutiny.

"The entire process against these men, from the trial through to the judgment, was opaque," said Dilxat Raxit, spokesman for the Munich-based World Uyghur Congress.

"There was also very little reasonable evidence to convict them on a legal basis, because all the evidence came from one side of the case," he said.

"We strongly condemn the Chinese government for continuing to pursue their policies of ethnic division," said Raxit.

"We are also strongly opposed to the death penalty in this case."

Earlier cases

Last month, the Supreme Court sentenced four Uyghurs to death for alleged involvement in an Aug. 19 bomb attack in Xinjiang’s western Aksu city.

The World Uyghur Congress pointed to concerns over lack of transparency in those cases too.

The Aksu blast left eight people dead, including two of the bombers, and 15 wounded after a man riding a three-wheeled vehicle threw explosives at a group of uniformed patrolmen. Four Uyghurs were arrested shortly after the attack.

State media characterized the cases as acts of terrorism and unrelated to longstanding ethnic tensions between Uyghurs and Han Chinese in the region.

Exiled Uyghur dissident Rebiya Kadeer has warned that attacks like those in Aksu will continue to occur until Beijing addresses the underlying source of tension in the region.

Millions of Uyghurs—a distinct, Turkic minority who are predominantly Muslim—populate Central Asia and Xinjiang.

Uyghurs say they have long suffered ethnic discrimination, oppressive religious controls, and continued poverty and joblessness despite China's ambitious plans to develop its vast northwestern frontier.

Those frustrations erupted in July 2009 in deadly riots that left nearly 200 people dead, by the Chinese government's tally.

At least 26 people, mostly Uyghurs, were sentenced to death in the aftermath of the riots, many of whom have been executed, according to state media.

China is believed to execute more people each year than the rest of the world’s countries combined, although the government does not publish official figures.

Rights groups say Beijing may execute as many as several thousand prisoners annually.

Chinese authorities blame Uyghur separatists for a series of deadly attacks in recent years and accuse one group in particular of maintaining ties to the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

New training scheme

China on Wednesday also announced a training scheme which places ethnic minority graduates from Xinjiang in work elsewhere in China.

Governments of the destination cities will spend 450 million yuan (U.S.$ 69 million) for the program, while Xinjiang will spend 400 million yuan (U.S.$ 61 million), the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The program targets some 60,000 jobless college graduates in Xinjiang, around 80 percent of whom are from ethnic minorities, and 60 percent of whom are women.

However, some commentators see the move as an attempt to assimilate non-Han Chinese into mainstream Chinese culture.

"From the point of view of ethnic minorities, the graduate work scheme is really taking the cream of youth from the minorities and using them to 'further cultural development,'" wrote one ethnic minority user on a popular microblogging service.

"In fact, the culture that is being advanced is Han culture, and this group of young people will have been totally brainwashed," the microblog update said.

An Urumqi resident surnamed Li agreed.

"They have run senior high school schemes like this before during the past few years," he said.

"Whether it's high-schoolers or graduate training programs, these are measures that are aimed at thought control and brainwashing, and the 'Partification' of their education," he said.

Whether it were actually in doubt, information acquired by the whistleblower website, Wikileaks, offers confirmed Chinese federal government worries over its ongoing charge of the location this calls Xinjiang, which is also referred to as Eastern Turkestan. The actual leaked out cables through U.S. diplomats demonstrate the actual degree to which Chinese language authorities attempt to persuade governments globally to adopt it's position upon issues affecting Uyghurs. The wires also display the U . s . States' concerns and sights regarding the on going repressive steps in the area.

Most lighting of Chinese language government pressure would be the cables directed to Chinese language frustration, or even the specter associated with Chinese ire, over the discharge of Uyghur detainees within Guantánamo to 3rd countries. The Dec 29, 08 cable applies exactly how Chinese language Assistant Foreign Reverend Liu Jieyi met using the U.Utes. Ambassador in order to China to tone of voice Beijing's powerful competitors associated with release in order to any country other than China, and that if the Ough.S. do certainly accede for this ask for it would "avoid harm to bilateral relations and also to cooperation ‘in important areas'". Furthermore, the February 2009 cable television describes how the Chinese language Ambassador in order to Kyrgyzstan, Zhang Yannian, regarded the feasible release of Uyghur Guantánamo detainees because "an unfriendly behave toward us" along with a "slap in the face". The U.Utes. government was firm within not really releasing the detainees in order to The far east illustrates the actual degree from the politicized character from the Chinese judicial system. Legitimate concerns over terrorism tend to be understandable, but in the actual U.Utes. government's observe the detainees would most likely encounter do-it-yourself torture as well as delivery if they returned in order to China

Chinese language federal government pressure in regard to the actual Uyghur Guantánamo detainees wasn't just put on the actual U.Utes. government, but also in order to Brand new Zealand along with a handful of European government authorities that were thinking about resettlement. Albania, Indonesia and Finland, in addition to European Union fellow member says just about all have the symptoms of paid for the impact of Chinese language federal government disappointment. Regarding Indonesia, which was at first prepared to think about two Uyghurs upon solely humanitarian reasons, Uyghur Guantánamo instances were much less better than additional detainees due to the negative effects accepting Uyghurs might have upon relationships along with The far east. The May Eight, '09 cable television relates how "German Ambassador Michael Schaefer documented that Germany experienced knowledgeable The far east from the U.Utes. ask for to accept some Uighur detainees kept from Guantánamo coupled with already been consequently cautioned through China of ‘a heavy load on bilateral relations' in the event that Indonesia were to accept any kind of detainees".

The actual diplomatic cables additionally talk about the actual unrest within Urumchi, the actual regional funds, within July '09. A This summer Thirteen, '09 cable discussing mass occurrences in China states:

"Ethnic riots like those in Xinjiang July 5-7 and in Tibet in 03 associated with 2008 differ markedly in source as well as nature from bulk incidents, XXXXXXXXXXXX stressed in order to PolOff [Political Officer] upon XXXXXXXXXXXX. Each present serious problems for the Party, XXXXXXXXXXXX stated, however the Celebration management would not hesitate to spread out fireplace on Uighurs or Tibetans when they considered this necessary to recover order. Bulk occurrences pose a different kind of threat, he said, since the leadership is ‘afraid' to fire on Han rioters with regard to anxiety about causing huge open public outrage that will change from the Party."

This can be a chilling opinion, particularly when one considers the evidence offered in two reviews released this year by the Uyghur Individual Rights Project (UHRP) as well as Amnesty International which fine detail eyewitness accounts from the utilization of deadly live fireplace against Uyghur protestors within This summer 2009. Additionally, the actual observation that fireplace wouldn't be used towards Han Chinese language protestors has resonances for the different approach used by Chinese security causes in Urumchi in order to Han Chinese language protests in Sept '09. During those direct orders, then Celebration Assistant, Wang Lequan, tackled protesters, who had required he let them know about government responses to protection issues. An identical ask for to satisfy using the Celebration Secretary through Uyghur demonstrators within This summer wasn't fulfilled.

The wider repercussions from the unrest additionally noticed a short discussion on the impact it might have upon Iran-China relationships, and on relations along with Australia after World Uyghur Congress President, Microsoft. Rebiya Kadeer, spoke at the National Press Club in Canberra within August 2009. Within the latter situation, the Chinese federal government "privately warn[ed] a major Australian financial institution that vendors the National Push Club to use it's impact to bar a Kadeer talk there".

The U . s . States' issues concerning the scenario in the Uyghur area are available via within the cables. In a discussion upon policy direction in Tibet, Ough.S. officials explain that it'll be impossible for Chinese frontrunners to consider the much softer line "if they look like they are doing so below worldwide pressure". The actual cable dated 04 16, 2008, one month after the outbreak associated with unrest within Tibetan areas, also relayed the actual declaration "that household stability remains the leadership's top priority above all else, which means there'll ‘almost surely' end up being absolutely no rest from the present hard line on Tibet or in places such as Xinjiang." The info contained in the cable television additionally storage sheds light about the severe level of sensitivity that the Chinese federal government sights territorial integrity, and also the feasible drip over associated with unrest through Tibet.

The prospect of methods to stress in Tibet and Xinjiang as a result of civil society are discussed in a Feb Twenty-four, 08 cable. Whilst recommending that China's economic success increases its resistance to democratic reform, the cable additionally talks about how Chinese frontrunners begin to see the effectiveness of "a restricted growth of municipal culture, including improvements within the guideline of regulation along with a more powerful part for authorized religions, NGOs, non profit organizations and other actors in areas that contribute to sociable stability and don't problem Communist Party rule." This is a significant change in considering, that has observed U.Utes. authorities promote the idea that Chinese financial development, and financial relations with China will bring in regards to a progressively democratic society; nevertheless, much more belief appears to be put into a grassroots movement than one that begins in the best levels of the Chinese language government. Nonetheless, the actual cable television proves which "[i]n areas such as Tibet and Xinjiang, driving a car associated with separatism results in tighter restrictions on the development of municipal society." This method is viewed as counter-productive through the official, that shows that the Ough.Utes. federal government "should continue to express...serious concerns more than Beijing's human rights record as well as attract China's growing awareness which greater regard with regard to human rights, religious freedom and the guideline of law assists to promote the very improvement and social stability which China looks for as well as to enhance China's international picture." This type of technique would consider considerable diplomatic skills considering "China's paranoid fear the United States secretly promotes routine change as well as ‘separatists' in Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang".

The cables provide understanding of the every day company of diplomacy that's rarely owned by the general public, which is interesting to note the amount of work carried out nowadays upon Uyghur issues. The importance of the actual part of the United States as a keep track of of Uyghur individual privileges problems in private discussions is made obvious, as well as contrasts with its sensible open public stance. Employees from the Uyghur Individual Privileges Task is actually comfortable with the pressure the Chinese federal government exerts upon Uyghur activists; still, the details associated with Chinese government stress on it's counterparts is illustrative of the diploma which Chinese authorities attempt to suppress contrary stories. With more facts in the future from Wikileaks, issues more than Uyghurs may not get the actual headlines, but the wires possess get rid of new gentle about the documentation of human rights conditions within the Uyghur area.

Little about the Uyghur People

In the center of the desert landscapes of Taklamakan, in the northern-west part of China, the land of Xinjiang is a very least populated province whereas it covers close to a sixth of the country's territory. Getting resisted while in generations the chinese domination, Xinjiang, or Old East Turkestan, fell within the Chinese Han control in 1949. From then, its population is primarily Uyghur People and Turkish - speaking System.

Muslim especially, the Uyghurs have a strong religious identification which usually, in specific, enabled them to preserve a strong big difference towards the Chinese invader. Without a doubt, the Uyghur Empire of Mongolia knew a great civilization, until its absorption by the Mongolian Empire in the XIIIth century.

Uyghurs in a muslim restaurante by Bertrand Linet

During their historical past, the Uyghur People successively adopted Shamanism, Manicheism, Buddhism and the Nestorianism before finally converting to Islam when the Arab conquerors beat the Chinese in year 751 BC., thus beginning the way to the Islamization of the entire Central Asia.

Under the effect of the religions which they adopted, Uyghur People taken successively, and at times in a competing way, a large number of written forms (turco-runic, brahmi, tokharien, soghdien) before developing their own unique graphic system.

The entrance of Islam was a great modification simply because it was followed by the assimilation of the Uyghur land in the immense Turkic and Muslim Empire. Thus, the descendants of Genghis Khan slowly replaced their writing by a Arabo-Persan alphabet, still used presently.

If their own writing, their language and their religion mark a real big difference with the tradition of Chinese Han, the Uyghurs also differ from their aspect, so characteristic of Central Asia's people. A matt skin, eyes representing a whole pallet of colors, from black to deep blue, features pointing out to the Mongolian, Turkish or Uzbek roots of these men and these women.

For a few years, China has integrated the proper identity of these remote people, though they represent only nine million people - a little for this huge region. Thus, Uyghur people are now part of the 56 ethnic minority groups having been well-known in an official way by the People's Republic of China.

This statute allows them a few privileges in a land where their big difference is very often repressed. Therefore, Uyghur people escape the "single child policy" and their language is known as the second official language in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

The integration of the Uyghur people and their culture in China, however, appears very illusory. The presence of all-natural sources in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, and its area with countries recognized as sensitive, strongly urged the government to increase the sinicization of this area. Million of Han thus came to settle in this new Chinese eldorado, monopolizing the more significant responsibility work opportunities.

In response to this true will to assimilate the Uyghur people into the Chinese culture, an independent party like East Turkistan Islamic Movement(ETIM) was born in the early 1990.

Saying more freedom, but primarily the recognition of their true identity, this movement was severely repressed by the power authorities in place Xinjiang.

The events of September 11, 2001, were the perfect occasion for the Chinese government to justify true reprisals: they declared the "Uyghur freedom fighters" as dangerous terrorists linked to Al Quaida because of their Muslim origins and their proximity with Pakistan and Afghanistan... However, the terrible repression which followed did not calm down the anger. The Uyghur population continues today to proudly keep up their identity and their culture , although they become a minority on their own land.

Business Making Money

As Americans, we’re often taught that trusts and monopolies are the product of big business and are bad. However, if trusts and monopolies are bad when Big Business engages in monopolistic ways, why isn’t it bad when Big Labor engages in the same sort of behaviors that are condemned when committed by Big Business?

For over a week now, the nation has watched tens of thousands march in protest to Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s budget plan. Democrat lawmakers (aka Fleebaggers) have fled the state in order to avoid doing their duty, while Obama’s OFA has bussed in the astroturf from out of state. While the union meme has been that Walker’s plan is “union-busting,” perhaps a more apt description would be “trust-busting.”

One of the most vocal opponents of Scott Walker’s budget plan has been the Wisconsin Education Association Council [WEAC]. As a union affiliated with the NEA, WEAC (according to its website) represents 98,000 “educators” in the State of Wisconsin.

Like any union, WEAC has a vested interest in maintaining the status quo when it comes to forced dues from Wisconsin school teachers, as well as automatic dues deduction from teachers’ paychecks—both of which would be eliminated under Walker’s proposal.

Employers will be prohibited from collecting union dues and members of collective bargaining units will not be required to pay dues.

In essence, Walker’s proposal threatens the life blood of the WEAC which, according to its most recent financial report on file (FY 2009), raked in over $25 million from teachers in a one year period.

Another threat to WEAC, which no one in the mainstream media is talking about is the threat to the union’s insurance trust, called WEA Trust. The WEA Trust is, in essence, a union-run “multi-employer” health insurance trust (the employers, in this case, are school districts).

The way it works is that WEAC has, through collective bargaining (negotiations), convinced school districts to pay into the WEA Trust and, in turn, the WEA Trust is responsible for administering teachers’ benefits. According to PublicSchoolSpending.com, Walker’s proposal would give school boards the ability to shop freely for more competitive insurance rates and save the state millions.

Last year, the Education Action Group issued a report which stated, among other things, that:

WEA Trust, an insurance company established and closely associated with the Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC), siphons millions of crucial dollars from K-12 schools and their students every year.

WEA Trust has grown very fat on public school dollars, with a net worth of $316 million and a team of 12 administrators all receiving compensation packages worth six figures per year.

Sadly, this insurance swindle is endorsed by state law.

The group’s Communications Director, Steve Gunn, explains:

The pressure derives from state law, which makes the identity of a school’s health insurance carrier a topic of collective bargaining between local unions and school boards. That allows union representatives to come to the table demanding expensive WEA Trust coverage, and frequently school boards give in.

[snip]

Once school districts sign up for WEA Trust coverage, and write the carrier into collective bargaining agreements, the shackles are on. And they aren’t easily removed.

Local unions often refuse to have the provision stricken from school labor contracts in subsequent negotiations. If a school board presses the issue in an effort to save money, WEAC will frequently take the case to arbitration.

The Trust’s business practices also complicate the problem.

Districts need employee claim histories to provide to potential bidders, but WEA Trust sometimes refuses to surrender the information, making it more difficult, if not impossible, for competitors to draft an accurate insurance estimate.

WEA Trust also reportedly threatens districts with higher premiums – by removing them from regional insurance pools with lower rates – if they consider a cheaper carrier.

Some districts have managed to break WEA Trust’s shackles and the savings tell the story. Officials from 15 districts recently told EAG that they saved six figures the first year under new coverage, while still providing quality health benefits for employees. They also say the cost of their new coverage has remained steady in subsequent years.

But there is a catch. Officials at all of the breakaway districts said they had to surrender, or at least share, the insurance savings with their local unions, generally in the form of salary increases. That left them with little or no extra revenue to cover other costs.

In other words, WEAC, the union that has been most vocal during the last week’s protests has a vested interest in maintaining the status quo.  If the union can defeat Scott Walker’s reform plans, not only does it keep the union dues of teachers, it also gets to keep its health insurance monopoly intact.

Of course, you’re not hearing this in the press as it doesn’t fit the convenient narrative of class warfare. So, the next time you have someone tell you how “mean” Scott Walker is for attacking the teachers’ union, you can simply reply: Follow the money.

Glenn Beck has been on Fox News now for a good two years– he’s heard it all. But it’s rare to find any profound level of disapproval among his Fox family. On last night’s Follow the Money on Fox Business, colleague Alan Colmes repeatedly denounced Beck’s use of Nazi references and apocalyptic rhetoric, shouting over a half-amused, half-disappointed panel that he was “sick and tired” of what he perceived to be the right wing’s double-standard on violent rhetoric.

Amid a discussion about the union chaos in Wisconsin, Colmes responded to panelist Dana Perino’s denouncement of a Nazi reference by Sen. Sherrod Brown by pointing out a number of people on the right that have done the same and been met with silence by this side of the aisle. “I don’t want any lectures from the right about rhetoric,” he began tersely, highlighting offensive comments from Rep. Louie Gohmert, Sen. Jim DeMint, and, yes, his own colleague. He asked Perino whether she was equally outraged “when Glenn Beck day after day invokes Hitler,” a comment greeted by the squawking of every other pundit on the panel. This time, however, Colmes wouldn’t let the issue settle and wouldn’t take evidence of those on the left making similar references as justification. Host Eric Bolling finally cut to break, apparently in the hopes of settling everyone down, to which Colmes muttered “thanks for mic-ing me up” somewhat irreverently.

But of course Colmes didn’t let the matter die there. Bolling changed the subject after the break, turning to Jesse Jackson’s call for revolution. Once again, Colmes cited a double standard, asking what the difference was between Jackson’s revolution comments and “when Glenn Beck says ‘the revolution is now*,’ when he goes on about revolution.” The panel once again erupts in dissent. “Who brought up Glenn Beck?” a disembodied voice sounds amidst the tumult, as Bolling finally regains control and claims Jackson’s rhetoric was the type that brought about such things as the Tucson shootings earlier this year. Once again Colmes persists. Yes, the segment ends with Eric Bolling taking out a baseball bat.

While it is fascinating to watch Beck take such criticism from one of his colleagues, it is also not unprecedented– a network family that employs figures like Beck and Sarah Palin alongside people like Colmes or Juan Williams needs to leave space for dissent. If anything, it legitimizes the “Fair and Balanced” slogan significantly to allow the dissent. Perhaps the most surprising note in this segment is to watch Colmes, typically the least frazzled in any given political panel, go to bat so strongly for one of his main points.

*To be fair, Beck only uses the term “revolution” in pointing out that the left is trying to engender one, not in any attempt to foment a revolution of his own.
